Rare 1954 Swallow Doretti roadsterProject car for restorationThis Doretti was originally white with a red interior.  At some point in its life, it was upgraded with a TR3A engine and front (disc) brakes.  The transmission/gearbox and rear axle also appear to have been upgraded to TR3A as well. The aluminum body is all there, but will need extensive straightening and finishing.  The steel inner body and floors have suffered some rust, as have the steel doors.  The chrome-moly steel chassis appears fundamentally sound, but will need to be refinished and may require spot repairs to e.g. the sill outriggers.  The engine does not turn, the wiring appears incomplete, and other mechanicals no doubt will need attention. In short, this rare Doretti will need a complete restoration.  Many trim parts can be sourced from other marques — for example, the instruments are Triumph, the seats and bumpers are Austin-Healey 100, the door trim and handles are Austin, etc.  Other components are available from the close-knit community of Doretti enthusiasts, such as the front grille and surround, which are being reproduced by a Doretti owner in Germany.  Windshields are said to be available new from Pilkington UK, and the windshield frame and stanchions could be fabricated from borrowed originals once you make friends in the Doretti register.  So while the car is missing some things, as you can see in the photos, those need not be serious hurdles to a successful restoration.Once completed, the car will again be a beautiful, classic British sportscar of outstanding design and impressive performance.  These are superior sport-touring cars, and the marketplace is starting to appreciate that, as prices continue to rise for restored examples.  Since only a small number were made — 280 or fewer — and only a few dozen survive worldwide, this represents a solid investment… in addition to being a lovely and enjoyable piece of British motoring history.I encourage you to take advantage of the extensive online resources available about the history and design of the Doretti.  Please feel free to ask any questions you may have about this specific car.
